Rifle Ammunition

  • Rifle ammunition consists of a cartridge referred to as a ‘Round’ that includes a Case, Primer, Propellant, and Projectile

  • The ‘Bullet’ in rifle ammunition is the Projectile that is propelled out of the barrel when the rifle is fired

  • Rifle ammunition is available in various ‘Caliber’, such as .22, .223, .308, and .30-06, each representing either the diameter of the Projectile or the diameter of the barrel interior referred to as the ‘Bore’

  • The caliber of a rifle determines the size and power of the ammunition it can fire

  • Rifle ammunition can have different projectile types, including full metal jacket (FMJ), hollow point (HP), soft point (SP), flat-nose (FN), and ballistic tip (BT) among others

  • The type of rifle ammunition chosen depends on the intended use, such as target shooting, hunting, or defense

  • Rifle ammunition can have different velocities and energies, which affect its trajectory, accuracy, function, and capability

  • Some rifle ammunition is specifically designed for long-range shooting and may have specialized features like ‘Boat-Tail’ bullets

  • Rifle ammunition can vary in terms of its recoil, with larger calibers and higher mass generally producing more recoil than smaller and lighter ones

  • Rifle ammunition generally has a higher amount of propellant within it and therefore pressure behind the projectile once fired. Some rifles though are chambered in handgun ammunition and can safely fire those being lower pressure and velocity.
